Review of the 3rd SMART4ALL workshop on HiPEAC 2023
On January 18th, SMART4ALL successfully organized the 3rd workshop in the context of the high-profile international HiPEAC Conference 2023, with the aim to expose the project to the computing community, to showcase selected pathfinder application experiments executed by SMART4ALL beneficiaries and consortium partners, as well as to share insights on the project sustainability after its typical duration.
The workshop took place at the Pierre Baudis Convention Centre in Toulouse (France), attracting about 20 attendees from the academic and industrial sector. The program included presentations from 11 speakers. On the opening session, SMARTALL technical manager, assistant professor at the University of Peloponnese (UoP), Dr. Christos Antonopoulos, gave an overview of the project and the communication officer from Patras Science Park (PSP), Dr Katerina Lamprakopoulou, presented statistics and success stories that emerged during the 3 years of SMART4ALL, while the assistant professor and SMART4ALL beneficiary, Dr. Paolo Meloni, representing the consortium of the 2nd CTTE D-Rabbit, gave an interesting short presentation of the funded project, that unlocked the potential of overlooked sensorimotor training by making balance boards smart and enabling gamification.
Invited keynote speaker, Mrs. Vesna Raskovic Depalov, Innovation and internationalization advisor at EEN Serbia, with her talk under the topic “Enterprise Europe Network (EEN Serbia): technology transfer academia via business”, offered useful insights about the technology and research commercialization strategies, presenting common challenges and success stories from the Serbian ecosystem. The keynote speech opened the discussion about the post-project sustainability of SMART4ALL, its tools and services and the technical managers assistant professors Christos Antonopoulos and Georgios Keramidas from UoP presented the challenges and roadmap to sustainability with an emphasis on the SMART4ALL Marketplace as a unique selling point and on a step-by-step approach based on lessons from other SAE projects.
After the discussion on sustainability, technical presentations were made by SMART4ALL partners and beneficiaries from KTE and CTTE Open Calls. In specific:
- Črt Valentinčič, CTO at Red Pitaya, gave a presentation on “Multi-channel RF signal acquisition system based on open-source rapid prototyping platform” that has been developed by Red Pitaya
- Bojan Lukic, Research Associate at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) that is the Digitized Task Force leader of SMART4ALL, offered insights on “AI Engineering in Digitized Transport - Challenges and the Way Ahead”
- Tamás Kovácsházy, Hungarian Project Manager and Task Force Leader for Digitized Anything from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME), presented “Low power, heterogeneous SoCs with SmartNICs capabilities for low-latency networked embedded systems”
- Luis Rodríguez Gil, CTO at LabsLand and REMOCLEC 2nd CTTE Project Leader, offered a brief overview of the funded project under the title “REMOCLEC and LabsLand: A remote laboratory for STM32 microprocessors for training and education”
- Marko Petković, Researcher at the Technical University of Eindhoven and representative of the 1st CTTE winning project TONI-AI gave an overview of the experiment on “Tracking of Nutrition Intake Using AI”
- Kirill Blazhko, CEO at TUNNLL and 2nd KTE winner, presented the application developed under SMART4ALL funding. His presentation had the title “Tunnll - More than an app: A CPS for public transportation”.
Apart from the workshop, SMART4ALL gained more visibility on HiPEAC through a poster session for EU projects offering a spotlight on the latest breakthroughs in European-funded research, while POP-LEC 2nd FTTE winning project was featured on the 68th issue of the HiPEAC magazine, which was distributed to all Conference participants.
